Red Velvet Fail

Well that didn’t go so well.

I went to my local Shaw’s to pick up some red velvet cake mix, as called for in the recipe for easy valentine’s treats by Bakerella. But there was none! My friend Anna says that red velvet cake is something special and that I shouldn’t just try the recipe with, say, angel food cake mix. But I’m kind of at a loss—either I get more complicated or I try for something different.

Anyone have any advice?

    But you’re not making a Red. Velvet. Cake. Now that we’re over that, I suggest you try a French Vanilla cake mix, add 1/3 cup dutch process cocoa and one bottle (1 or 2 oz) of red food coloring. Play around with the liquid amounts to make it look about right for a thick-ish batter (I think a very liquidy one won’t work out well for this recipe).

    I say this as a True Devotee of Red Velvet Cake. I’ve tried no fewer than seven different Red Velvet recipes (the real kind) and still think this is an acceptable solution to the conundrum. Anyway, unless you’re serving to Haute Southerners, no one will know the difference.
